Teaching Philosophy

As a music educator, I believe that each child is a unique individual who needs a secure, caring, and stimulating atmosphere in which to grow emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. It is my desire to provide an effective learning environment in which students meet their fullest potential: an environment that is culturally inclusive, and invites the sharing of ideas. The elements that I believe are conducive to establishing such an environment include, allowing the child's natural curiosity to direct his/her learning, promoting respect for all things and all people, and making sure the student knows that I truly care about their personal well-being as well as their education.

As a music teacher, it is my belief that all students, regardless of socio-economic status, physical or intellectual ability, should be offered the opportunity to discover and explore their intrinsic potential as musicians. My goal is not only to form an appreciation for a variety of musical genres, but also to encourage children to shape their own unique musical identity, through academic study and performance opportunities.

To me, an effective teacher is one who adheres to the required curriculum, but presents the material in an innovative manner that is easily graspable to students of all learning styles.  It is my belief that students will thrive if an educator provides quality repertoire and instruction, and adheres to consistent and clear goals for both behavior and musical proficiency. I think that rules and expectations for learning should represent a mutual contract of respect, responsibility, and safety in the effort to optimize learning.

In summary, my mission as a music educator is to guide all of my students towards a life-long love of music. I want my students to become cognitive thinkers, team players, develop resilience, as well as become musically inclined: all skills fostered by a well-rounded music education. I will teach them music and in turn music will teach them skills they can use in an array of different aspects, regardless of their ultimate career choice.
